Course in Recertification to function as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer 30523QLD

Who Should Attend

Persons who are currently qualified as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer and require ongoing training and assessment every five years as required by the Queensland Workplace Health and Safety legislation.  Upon completion of the course the participant can then apply for re-appointment as Workplace Health and Safety Officer.

 The Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995 requires that a Workplace Health and Safety Officer must be appointed when there are 30 or more workers normally employed at a workplace (i.e. for a total of 40 days or more per year). At a construction workplace where 30 or more people work during a 24 hour period or if the principal contractor has built 30 or more houses during the past year.

What will I learn?

The course enables participants to update competencies of current legislative requirements and workplace health and safety practices enabling the Workplace Health and Safety Officer to establish or monitor existing appropriate educational programs and undertake current consultative, advisory, investigative and reporting functions.

Am I eligible to undertake this training?

Participants are required to provide documentary evidence of completing 30596QLD Course in Functioning as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer and are available to attend the course and sit for assessment. 

Participants are required to have sufficient numeracy and literacy skills to read and comprehend instructions for:

  • Referencing and understanding Queensland current workplace health and safety legislation, standards and related materials.
  • Assisting Queensland State Government workplace health and safety officials.
  • Preparing workplace health and safety reports.
  • Establishing appropriate educational programs.
  • Investigating work injuries, work caused illnesses and dangerous events.
  • Consulting with workers, employers, and statutory health and safety officials.

What if I need help with reading, writing or mathematics?

We can provide support in language, literacy and numeracy in some areas.  Where we cannot we will provide direction to other agencies who may be able to assist.

Can what I already know be taken into account? (RPL)

Yes, your history of study, skills and experience can be taken into account but it must support the competencies included in the unit of competency below. Documentary evidence and interview will be required.

WHSO/01R – Provide advice on Workplace Health and Safety

Objectives

This course provides the participants with the skills and competencies to:

  • Satisfy the Queensland workplace health and safety requirements to be qualified as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer.
  • Advise employers or principal contractors about the overall state of health and safety in the workplace.
  • Conduct inspections in the workplace to identify any hazards and unsafe or unsatisfactory workplace health and safety conditions and practices.
  • Report to the employer or principal contractor any hazard or unsafe or unsatisfactory workplace health and safety practice identified during inspections.
  • Establish appropriate educational programs in workplace health and safety.
  • Investigate or assist the investigation of all work injuries, work caused illnesses and dangerous events at the workplace.
  • Help inspectors in the performance of the inspectors’ duties.
  • Report injury, illness or risk to the employer or principal contractor if any work injury, work caused illness, dangerous event or immediate risk to workplace health and safety occurs at the workplace.

Course Management

At the commencement of the course you will be provided with an induction which includes legislation, health and safety, assessment, grievances, appeals and any other issues which could affect you in this course.

Course Fees

$400.00 (GST free) per participant

Course fees include extensive course notes, relevant legislation, lunch, morning and afternoon tea each day.

 What will I receive at the conclusion of the course?

Your competencies will be assessed through completion of examinations, assessment exercises and on site assignment.  Upon successful completion of the course you will be issued with a “Workplace Health and Safety Officer Assessment Report / Certificate Authority Application”.

Additional Costs and Expenses

Where the training is conducted outside the immediate Cairns area then additional costs will be applicable.  Any airfares, travel, accommodation, meals and materials freight incurred in the provision of this training will be charged at cost. Mileage will be charged at 70c (plus GST) per kilometre and traveling time will be charged at our standard rates. Please contact us for a formal quotation for courses conducted outside of Cairns.

Course Venue and Equipment

The course is conducted in our training rooms in Scott Street, Bungalow.  Where courses are conducted on?site then a suitable venue, data projector and white board are to be provided by the client company.  The venue shall have sufficient space for the participants to be seated comfortably for the duration of training. Any catering costs shall be borne by the client company.  Please contact us to discuss alternate arrangements if there is any difficulty in providing these facilities and equipment.

Participants will be required to bring to the course copies of the latest legislation applicable to their industry.
