Who Should Attend
An employer must appoint a qualified person as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer (WHSO) where thirty or more workers are normally employed at the workplace. A Principal Contractor must appoint a Workplace Health and Safety Officer if thirty or more persons work at the construction workplace during any 24 hour period or if the Principal Contractor has built more than 30 domestic premises during the previous years.
A person is qualified to apply for a WHSO certificate of authority of appointment if he/she has satisfactorily completed the two stages of the approved WHSO training being:
- the core module (5 days duration), which must be completed by persons from all industry groups; and
- an industry specific elective module – construction (4 days), industrial (3 days), services (2 days).
This course provides the core module which is a pre-requisite to the industry specific module.
What will I learn?
For a participant who has successfully completed both the core module and the industry specific modules, a sound knowledge of:
- the Workplace Health and Safety Act and subordinate legislation as they apply to the work performed at the workplace;
- workplace health and safety practices; and
- incident investigation procedures and risk management.
Am I eligible to undertake this training?
Participants are required to have sufficient numeracy and literacy skills to read and comprehend instructions for:
- Referencing and understanding Queensland current workplace health and safety legislation, standards and related materials.
- Assisting Queensland State Government workplace health and safety officials.
- Preparing workplace health and safety reports.
- Establishing appropriate educational programs.
- Investigating work injuries, work caused illnesses and dangerous events.
- Consulting with workers, employers, and statutory health and safety officials.
Course Management
At the commencement of the course you will be provided with an induction which includes legislation, health and safety, assessment, grievances, appeals and any other issues that could affect you in this course.
Course Duration
Five days.
Objectives
This course provides the participants with the skills and competencies to:
- Advise relevant parties about the overall state of health and safety at the workplace.
- Establish appropriate educational programs in workplace health and safety.
- Help inspectors in the performance of the inspectors’ duties.
- Identify and manage risks in the workplace by applying risk management principles.
- Report to relevant parties any hazards and unsafe or unsatisfactory workplace health and safety conditions and practices identified during inspections.
- Conduct an audit and develop a health and safety action plan.
- Respond to and investigate incidents that happen in the workplace.
- Deal with emergency situations and first aid.
Units of Competence (Core Units)
WHSO/01 – Provide advice on Workplace Health and Safety
WHSO/02 – Manage health and safety hazards and risks in the workplace
WHSO/03 – Manage workplace Incidents
Recognition of Prior Learning
Your history of study, skills and experience can be taken into account but it must support the criteria included in the above units of competency. Documentary evidence and interview will be required.
Reading, Writing and Mathematics
We can provide support in some areas. Where we cannot we will provide direction to other agencies who may be able to assist.
What will I receive at the conclusion of the course?
Your competencies will be assessed through completion of examinations, assessment exercises and on site assignment. Upon successful completion of the course you will be issued with a “Workplace Health and Safety Officer Assessment Report / Certificate Authority Application” for the core modules.
Course Fees
$820.00 (GST free) per participant.
Course fees include extensive course notes, relevant legislation, lunch, morning and afternoon tea each day.
Additional Costs and Expenses
Where the training is conducted outside the immediate Cairns area then additional costs will be applicable. Any air fares, travel, accommodation, meals and materials freight incurred in the provision of this training will be charged at cost. Mileage will be charged at 70c (plus GST) per kilometre and traveling time will be charged at our standard rates. Please contact us for a formal quotation for courses conducted outside of Cairns.
Course Venue and Equipment
The course is conducted in our training rooms in Scott Street, Bungalow. Where courses are conducted on?site then a suitable venue, data projector and white board are to be provided by the client company. The venue shall have sufficient space for the participants to be seated comfortably for the duration of training. Any catering costs shall be borne by the client company. Please contact us to discuss alternate arrangements if there is any difficulty in providing these facilities and equipment.
