Who Should Attend

Persons involved in the preparation of traffic management plans which could include project supervisors, project managers, and project engineers.

For those wishing to audit traffic management plans it is recommended that an auditor qualification be held or auditor course be attended. Training is available through Queensland Training Services Pty Ltd. Contact our office for details.

What will I learn?

This course provides participants with the knowledge to prepare a traffic management plan in accordance with the client's specifications, in particular the Department of Transport and Main Roads Specification – Provision of Traffic. This course meets the requirements of the Workplace Health & Safety Queensland Traffic Management for Construction or Maintenance Work Code of Practice 2008 in preparation of a work zone traffic management plan.

Am I eligible to undertake this training?

To undertake this course a participant must first provide evidence of an understanding of the requirements of The Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) Part 3 Works on Roads (Reprint April 2007). This can be achieved by providing a copy of a Statement of Attainment or Statement of Attendance in BCCCM3003C Implement Traffic Management Plan or a similar course which has been attended since April 2007.

At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Interpret traffic management plan briefs;
  • Interpret Australian and other appropriate standards;
  • Interpret engineering survey information;
  • Interpret hydrological and meteorological data;
  • Interpret cultural and heritage data;
  • Carry out risk assessments;
  • Interpret traffic analysis data;
  • Determine traffic management plan capacity requirements;
  • Select traffic management plan options;
  • Provide leadership and coordination;
  • Choose appropriate implementation techniques;
  • Develop and apply design standards;
  • Apply computer based design technology;
  • Apply industry or government standard design software;
  • Calculate flow rates, level of service, capacities and percentages;
  • Maintain design cost records;
  • Provide clarification and advice;
  • Apply client feedback techniques.

What if I need help with reading, writing or mathematics?

We can provide support in some areas. Where we cannot we will provide direction to other agencies who may be able to assist.

Can what I already know be taken into account? (RPL)

Yes, a person's history of study, skills and experience can be taken into account but it must support the competencies included in the above units of competency. Documentary evidence and an interview will be required.

Course Management

At the commencement of the course participants will be provided with an induction which includes legislation, health and safety, assessment, grievances, appeals and any other issues that could affect the participant. The course structure provides for some instruction but generally it will be a facilitated workshop which will include a demonstration in producing computer aided drawings.

Public Course: $440.00 (GST inclusive ) per participant

Onsite Course: $1200.00 plus $250 (GST inclusive) per participant for course notes and assessment for a group delivery. Maximum 12 persons.

What do I need to bring?

You will need to bring a copy of the latest versions of the MUTCD Part 3 Works on Roads, the Department of Main Roads Specification MRS11.02 and the Workplace Health & Safety Traffic Management Code of Practice 2008. Other project specific specifications may also be brought if you wish. If you have a traffic management plan which you have previously prepared, bring it along. A laptop computer with a traffic management plan drawing program may also be useful. If you cannot arrange for a copy of the above documentation, we can arrange at additional cost.

How will I be assessed?

Your competencies will be assessed through participation in the theory component and completion of a practical assignment which is to be handed in at a later date.

What will I receive at the conclusion of the course?

Upon successful completion of the theory course only you will be issued with a statement of attendance.

Upon successful completion of the theory course and provision of evidence of application of the practical components of the Unit of Competency, you will be issued with a statement of attainment.

Additional Costs and Expenses

Where the training is conducted outside the immediate Cairns area then additional costs will be applicable. Any airfares, travel, accommodation, meals and materials freight incurred in the provision of this training will be charged at cost. Mileage will be charged at 70c (plus GST) per kilometre and traveling time will be charged at our standard rates. Please contact us for a formal quotation for courses conducted outside of Cairns.

Course Venue and Equipment

Where courses are conducted on-site then a suitable venue (which can accommodate up to 11 participants) and a white board are to be provided by the client company. The venue shall have sufficient space for the participants to be seated comfortably for the duration of the theoretical training. Practical assessment will require the use of a traffic management equipment and time/area allocated to allow participants to be assessed without interruption. Any catering costs shall be borne by the client company. Please contact us to discuss alternate arrangements if there is any difficulty in providing these facilities and equipment.
